Interview with Vee Hendro

Vee Hendro is one of the lead designers at Storybrewers Roleplaying and is one of the minds behind Good Society, the Jane Austen inspired RPG. I got to sit down with her recently at TableTopCon 2024 where we spoke about how she got into game design and tips she’d give to up-and-coming creators.

Q. How did you get into tabletop RPGs?
A. I was introduced through boardgames back in 2010. While browsing the local game store, I got curious about the RPG section and eventually found myself playing Mouseguard and Fiasco.

Q. And is that where you started creating RPG content?
A. Yeah, it started as homebrew because we wanted to tell different stories and evolved from there.

Q. What advice would you give to a new creator looking to enter the RPG industry?
A. First, start small. One page, or even just a business card size is enough. The important thing is to go through the whole cycle, ideation, writing, playtesting, producing and presenting the game. Then when you’re ready, put it out into the world! On itch.io, social media, or your own website. You won’t get it right the first time so learn from the feedback you get.

Q. And what about the next step?
A. When you’re ready, begin reaching out to your local community and find discord channels that share your passion. Crowdfunding is complex so make sure you have some help.

Q. What are your thoughts about the roleplaying scene in Australia?
A. I think more people are coming in. With it, communities are growing larger and faster. Most of it is online, which makes it easy to connect and find communities! There is also more and more focus on indie games.

Q. Thank you for your time. Is there anything else you’d like to say?
Check out our kickstarter for Castles in the Air, a new RPG inspired by Little Women, which ends June 9th. And remember, storytelling is awesome!
